What is Recovery?

The concept of ‘Recovery’ has grown from a belief, originally extolled by those with a lived experience of mental illness, that people can live more meaningful and fulfilling lives than society has traditionally been willing to accept.

Recovery is fast becoming a philosophy that is now shared and valued by people accessing mental health and specialist learning disability services and staff practitioners alike.

Recovery should be understood as the process of living a meaningful and fulfilling life with or in spite of illness, rather than as a ‘cure’ from symptoms of illness.
